April 4, 2023 — Several years ago, Dr. Anuj Chandra began offering his sleep apnea patients the option of Inspire, a pacemaker-like device that can treat sleep apnea when the more common CPAP treatment isn’t possible. Until recently, people had to go to Nashville for outpatient surgery to implant the device. But now, patients can get the surgery in Chattanooga.
The Chattanooga Times Free Press interviewed Dr. Chandra about the new option for Inspire surgery in Chattanooga.
“People with sleep apnea are commonly treated with CPAP, but it doesn’t work for everybody,” said Dr. Chandra. “Inspire is an alternative to CPAP that is somewhat similar to a cardiac pacemaker. A small device is implanted in the patient’s chest, and it gently stimulates the throat muscles to stay open and allow the patient to breathe normally.”
